The Roads Are Melting

Back in the decade of the '40s we just loved when the roads
melted......Growing up in New York City during these years,
we children played 'street games'.....Like every game there
may be parts or pieces needed to play.....

We had rubber balls, we had marbles and we had 'homemade'
discs.....These discs were usually bottle caps....Some serrated,
some perfectly smooth......Motts Apple Juice still makes a good
'street disc', 'token' or 'marker'.....

In order to get that athletic 'edge' we would try to find something
to 'fill' the cap with.....The added weight resulted in more control
of your disc, whether it had to be thrown, as in Hop Scotch or
slid, as in Skully......

The best material you could get for your disc was hot, melted
tar from the street.......If you could not get tar for your disc
after a 'pot hole' repair than you waited for that hot summer
day when you could take your little pocket knife, screwdriver
or even olde nail and just scrape it up from the street.......

The only draw back, in those days, was getting it off your
fingers and may God help you your clothing......"Goop" and
"Oops" were not yet invented......Pumps

Scissors Ain't Dead Yet

Recently the whole world has been taken over by the "must have"
new technology in what ever field the technology is in.....

Have you ever tried to prepare a package of Caesar Salad,
bought at your local supermarket, WITHOUT a pair of scissors....

You have to open the bag with scissors, tearing along the
dotted line just never works.....I guess it has to do with the
nature of high speed packaging equipment.....The dotted line
and the 'tear point' never really line up exactly........

Next you have to cut the package of croutons open.....Followed
by the salad dressing and then the Parmesan grated cheese......
You have to use scissors because if you tried to open each
package by tearing at the "designated tear slot" the product
would be all over the kitchen counter.....Olde fingers.....

To solve all the engineered packaging problems in today's
world, I hope you own a good pair of utilitarian scissors
and, come to think of it, a jar opener.....Pumps

Idiot Found

After posting yesterday's blog, I came across an article on the
internet from "Live Science"......(People, please do not laugh.).....

A scientist suggests that by injecting the chemical compound
of sulfur into the second atmospheric layer closest to the Earth,
it would reduce the effect of sunlight by reflecting it back into
space......Here is how to do it.....

You place the sulfur into a artillery gun, carry it into the
atmosphere by means of a balloon and fire the gun......This
will release the sulfur and protect us......However, it should
take about six months for any temperature change to take
effect......

I suggest that there is an easier way.....Why not have every
human being on the planet Earth light a match at the same
time.....Will not the sulfur in the match float into the
atmosphere and do the same thing, with out the cannon-balloon?.....

Oh well and they thought Rube Goldberg was odd.....Pumps

Sun Kills People

Dah, the World Health Organization has just concluded that
60,000 people die due to the effects of the sun.....This
announcement has nothing to do with global warming, it is
just due to the fact that the sun exists in the sky.....

It appears that those effected by the above mentioned
statistic want to change their genetic skin color.....Some
48,000 die of malignant melanomas and another 12,000
for other forms of skin cancer caused by UV rays......

There are many 'causes' out there which want to reduce the
'death rate' of something or another, and they have passed
various laws in order to reduce the 'death rate'.....IE: Drunk
drivers and cigarette smoking......I wonder what form or
taxation or legal penalty they will enforce to try to reduce
the amount of 'sun deaths'?.......Close all the beaches?.....
Umbrella carrying?......No short sleeves or shorts in clothing
design?......

Just wait......Some idiot will come up with an idea.......Pumps

Getting Older

As you get older you realize that the number of younger people
around you increases....I suspect that this is a normal and
natural phenomena.....

The 'youngins' have long since looked to their elders for
wisdom and guidance......The days of the "Ancient Oracle" are
long gone.....

While we may become more 'reflexed challanged', (see my Blog
dated 7/26/2006), or 'weak of muscle', we do however,
DO NOT BECOME STUPID......

In that fact alone, the youth of today have shown their
Achille's Heel........Pumps

What's Wrong With The Word "Dump"?

In my 70 years almost everything has changed.....Counties
have been renamed along with government sites and
job descriptions......No one works at the town "dump"
anymore.......They work in the "recycling center", "land-
fill" or "transfer station"....

I know that a "garbage man" became a "sanitary engineer"
years ago and that "secretaries" are now "administrative
assistants" or "coordinators"......But, I just love this new one....

"Loss prevention employee" in a home improvement store......
There goes "security guard".......And the pity is that the
job titles have changed but not the hourly wage......A "loss
prevention specialist" still makes the same as a "guard".....

Every Generation

By the standard of some sociologists, there is a new generation
of people every twenty years......Well the Arabs and Israel
have been at it now for the last four generations.....

1947 (+20) = 1967 (+20) = 1987 (+20) = 2007.....Alright
give or take a few years, one way or the other.......

Using this formula, when the current situation settles down
in the Mid-East, the next big "brew-ha-ha" will be in the
year 2027, or there abouts.......The survivors of this battle
will procreate, on both sides, and produce the combatants
needed in 20 years......

It is rare, in History, to find where a society or culture went
100 years or 5 generations without any conflict.....The
peace must have been wonderful......Pumps

I Ain't Dead

Pumps' did receive a strange and somewhat funny telephone call
this morning.....When the phone was answered the party on
the other end said, "You ain't dead...How do you feel?.....Are
you sick?".......

I guess when I retired, some two years ago, some people
in my work industry, presumed that I died instead of retire....

Once the matter was cleared up an ex-coworker said that
he was sorry for the misinformation......My response was,
"Don' t be sorry....I am just happy so many of my
ex-coworkers are still concerned about my well being".......

Yep, Pumps is still alive and well in Jabunyaville......Typed

WHAT We Fight

A gentleman by the name of Omar Bakri was recently
expelled from Britain......It seems that Mr. Bakri was a
mullah at a mosque and thought that "terrorists were
magnificent martyrs"......

Well due to a newspaper campaign it came to light that
this mullah, who liked terrorists, was living on the dole
(welfare, government subsistence) with his wife and six
kids.....(I guess he did not "mullah" all the time")......

Guess where Mr. Bakri was expelled to?.....Yep, you got it
Beirut, Lebanon.......

Don't you think that Mr. Bakri was caught trying to sneak
onto a ship of the Royal Navy in order to escape the turmoil
in Beirut?.......Don't you think that Mr. Bakri wants a visa to
visit with his wife and kids in England?......Don't you think
that Mr. Bakri may be a little scared of the bombing and
war in Lebanon?......

Our enemy......Large mouths standing behind cannon fodder.....
Mr. Bakri has more desire to have a seventh and eighth
child than to be a "magnificent martyr" himself.......Pumps

Lebanon Evacuation

In all fairness getting people out of Lebanon is NOT Bush's
problem.....When you monitor, English language, newspapers
like I do, you find out that there are some Canadians who
hate Harper and Australians that hate Howard.....

I suspect that there some Englishmen who had something
to say but it was not reported in the British conservative
newspaper that I monitor.....So nothing on Blair......

Survival is one 'basic' of being a human animal......As with
other animals on this earth, it is the same but they can
not talk.....I guess that us, who can, have to complain about
life's human struggle......It must make good table chat in
one's future years......Or better yet, a 'book deal'....Pumps

Petition Signing

Recently a young man came to my door and wanted my
signature on his petition to stop a local 'out-of-state"
landfill operation....When questioned he 'upped' his
position by using the word "Toxic".....

I know that perhaps on a moments notice this individual
will be willing to circulate any petition on any social
matter.......What gets me is the following:

#1 They wear shoes made from either leather (an animal
by-product) or plastic (containing toxic chemical).
#2 They arrive in the sub-division by car (which consumes
gasoline and creates CO2 pollution) or by bicycle with
rubber tires (we are back to oil by-products and
chemicals again).....
#3 They adorn themselves with clothing which is not all
100% cotton or wool (toxic chemicals again)....
#4 They carry forms which are made from paper (a tree
thing).....Of course a pencil (tree) or ball point pen
(plastic and chemicals again) are used also.....

My real question is, that if they are such believers in
their cause, why are they not WALKING to my door
with REED shoes, all COTTON clothing and carrying
a ROCK SLATE and piece of COAL on which to sign
their petition.....I guess they really do not think things
through.....Pumps

American Siesta

Has anyone noticed that "there is not one".......

The newspapers are full of the immigrant situation and how
these new people to America will not assimilate into the
society......They are Mexican or Central Americans and they
chose to live by their social culture......

How come no one is taking a "Siesta"?.....Where are the
groups of people sitting outside of houses ' under construction'
or leaning against their lawn mowers during the heat of the
day under their sombreros?.......

I guess America must be 'cooler' than their country of birth
or is it an American "no work - no pay" thing?.....

Just to 'bust' the Global Warming crowd, if it is so hot, why
are these people not taking their customed "Siesta"?......

Just 'had' to say that......Pumps

The S*** Word

Well the "S" word has made the news......It seems that our
President Bush has used it.......And everyone is aghast.....

There are many opinions for the source or roots of the
'word'....Some are humorous and some may be factual....

This word is in very common usage all through out the
English language.....In Britain, it is used in a TV script
with no problem......There is one episode of South Park
which contained the word over 100 times, if I remember
correctly......

I researched the word on 'google' once and it seems the
source of the word goes all the way back to Olde English
and beyond.....While the spelling of the word has changed
some, I suspect its pronunciation has not, and its meaning
has changed little, if any......It still means "Warm
animal dropping"......Pumps

Dog Days Of Summer

Well I guess the 'days' have arrived here in Jabunyabille.....
Temperatures across the area are measuring from 92F
to 98F.......Tomorrow it will be a few degrees hotter.....

Wonder if we will hit the record of 101F set back in 1980.....
Your remember 1980, that was during the forthcoming
New Ice Age.....

I love were "Dog Days" came from......It is a Southern
thing.......When it got real hot in the southern states of,
this USofA, the household pet or pets would spend the
'heat' of the day under the front porch, in the cool shade.....

At least there are some creatures, which inhabit this earth,
that are not stupid......Pumps

Olde Age Memory

A lot of the time us 'seniors' get a bad 'rap' from the young
folk.....You forget a thought and all of a sudden you have
a case of dementia or Alzheimer's....

On the other hand if we DO remember something of the
past, they may not want to hear it.......For some reason
History does not fit into their 'immediate' world......

Well it looks like the Middle East has 'blown up' again......
There are you college students in Lebanon wanting to
know "Where are the Marines"......I wonder if these students
have the same 'mind set' as the ones that have protested
Military recruitment on their own campuses?....."If you do
not hire firemen, they can not come to your door with the

Tar Beach

You have to have lived in New York City without a dime in your
pocket to appreciate Tar Beach......Without the money to get on
a subway train or a bus, you were destined to cool off on a hot
summer day by going up to the roof of your apartment building....

There you spread a blanket (insulation) on the hot tar rolled
roofing of the building......Now it was time to enjoy a bottle of
Coke and hope that there was a breeze coming.....Prior to the
days of air conditioning, if you sat in your apartment you would
'cook'......Good olde Tar Beach, while hot, had air and air meant a
possible breeze.....Possible breeze meant 'cool'.......

On those olde hot days, if you could not make it to Coney Island
or Orchard Beach, there was Tar Beach.......It may not have
been great fun but at least no one could kick sand in your
face.......You can not kick tar......Pumps

Jabunyaville Opinion

Gasoline is almost up to $77 a barrel.......Per gallon near $3.00
or above......And Americans bought 1.7% more gas last month
than a year ago, when it was cheaper.......

Everyone likes to bitch about Americans and maybe they
are right.....That we do not care......We bitch about gasoline
prices and ATM surcharges, for a while, then adjust and get
on with our lives......There are those amongst us that
bitch more often and about more things but I suspect that
they spend more on a bottle of wine than I do........

Americans are FREE and RESILIENT.......Islam wants to
conquer us and China would like to control us becoming
number one.......Maybe 600 years from now, if the
Democracy falls (as did Ancient Greece and Rome), the
Mexican-Islamic-Buddhists can have a 'go' at empire
building.......Till then, like other Americans, "I ain't

Mbps

"Million bits per second".....Every Internet Provider (IP) has
advertisements as to how FAST their service works.....And the
speed is measured in Mbps......The more Mbps, the faster your
computer will 'download and upload' information.....WRONG....
These companies only mention the Mbps that are AVAILABLE
for your use........

If you ask your IP for actual speed, as I have on many an
occasion, they will only test to see if you are properly connected.....
They can not confirm your speed.......As many have found out
you can 'test' your speed and in 'no way' does it come anywhere
near the advertised specials.......

Well the newest competitor, in Jabunyaville, has been forced to
acknowledge the above in the 'fine print' of its mailer......
Fact: Speed is based on the connection between your computer
and their 'servers' covering your location....Fact: Upload and
download speeds can be 'messed' up by a lot of things----wires,
your own computer, internet traffic and the operating condition
of the 'server' you want to reach......Fact: Speed in not
guaranteed..........

I guess like everything else in the world today, computer speed
problems are 'someone else's' fault........One fact is now known,
it is not the fault of the IP.......After all he DOES have the Mbps.....
And you can pay for 'your' inablity not to use them....Pumps

Kelly Ripa is Right

This morning on the "Live With Regis & Kelly" TV show, Ms. Ripa
mentioned that she was not fond of the Fourth of July because it
meant the end of Summer......Also that August was a 'down' month.....

You know in a way she has a great point.......Here it is only one
week after the '4th' and the stores are putting out their "Back
To School" stocks......Today in the mail I received catalogs from
LL Bean and Bed Bath & Beyond each had a focus to 'back to
school', also......Whether it be for backpacks for books or storage
space and cooking equipment for the college dorm.....

Years ago 'back to school' was the end of August and Christmas
started in early December......As soon as the kids are back in
school it is Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff
on the shelves all at the same time......Why are the advertisers
and marketers trying to rush through life so fast?.....It seems
to go fast enough by itself without any additional help.....Pumps

Canada, July 1936

The Edmonton, Alberta SUN newspaper printed an interesting
article regarding an event that happened some 70 years ago.....

For a 10 day period in early July, 1936 the Provinces of Canada
from Alberta, in the west, to Ontario, in the east, were subjected
to a heat wave.....The excessive heat caused the death of 780
people, (remember pre-AC days).....Temperatures ran as high
as 113 F (or 43 C)......

It is a pity that Al Gore was not around then......He could have
told us what the Canadians had done wrong to cause such
warming of the Earth.......Maybe they are still doing it and it
is 'creeping' across the border into the US?......Pumps

Kiss Cooking #2

As a rank amateur cook for the past 25 years or so, I firmly
believe in the Keep It Simple Stupid cooking method.....

In stead of a recipe this blog is on a 'tool'.....That tool being
The Digital Pocket Thermometer.......Mine is manufactured
by the Pyrex Company, (same people who make the
measuring cups.).....It has become my 'cooking buddy'
gadget.......

It lets me know if the beef is rare, medium, done or even
over-done (for shredding purposes).....Great for not
over-cooking chicken or pork, which taste like 'rubber'
if you do so........Even great to see if the microwaved
left-overs are hot enough to be served properly.......

I think I broke the household budget, one week, and
spent $14.95 on the thing......Boy, I must have saved
that much in 'over-cooked' food by now.....For the
price of a large pizza you to can become an amateur
cook of some renown.......Pumps

Drinking, Smoking, Taxes

This age olde issue is still around......Tax 'sin'......About 100
years ago there was a movement to stop the 'drinking'....
The movement was well organized and proved successful.....
No more drinking.....After over 500 murders and a the
Depression, stopping people from drinking was a mistake.....

Now it is smoking.....(I smoked for 25 years and went 'cold
turkey....I have no problem with it.).........On one side of the
issue is to stop everyone from smoking......But on the other
hand, How do you replace the $2.75 tax on a pack of 'butts'?....

AGV (aka Lawn)

Yes, at the front of my house there is a medium sized patch of
Assorted Green Vegetation.......After years of toil, struggle and
expenditure of funds, I have decided to live with the resulting
AGV.......

Members of the a state university* sent their people around
to take soil samples and provide the necessary seeding and
fertilizing regimen = result AGV.......Tree removal, for the
purpose of additional sunlight, = result AGV of a greener and
heartier variety.....

The only good fact is that here in Jabunyaville the neighbors
have had mixed results with their 'plots of beautification'......
The Lawn Man has a perfect lawn thanks to his high water
bill and left over 'customer' seed......The Florist Man has been
able to divert attention from his 'patch of green' with the use
of plants and flowers.......The Mexican Man rakes his 'patch'
in order to duplicate the look of a Cancun beach.....The
Electrician Man just yells at his friend the Lawn Man......

As for me, I will just keep my AGV cut very low so that no one
can tell the difference from the Kentucky Blue and the

Fireworks

Two nights ago all three major TV networks had programs,
in prime time, which contained a fireworks display in honor
of the Fourth of July.....

Washington DC, New York and Boston had very large displays.....
In fact we even had one here at Lake Jabunyaville, which
of course was somewhat smaller......

If I remember my 1953 high school chemistry class, these
fireworks contain some form of carbon, along with potassium
nitrate, phosphorus and other chemicals used for various
colors......When these firework 'shells' explode the carbon
mixes with oxygen forming CO2 (carbon dioxide).....

I have not seen Al Gore's movie on global warming and have
no intention to......For those who have, is there any mention,
in the movie, of the banning of all fireworks on the Fourth of
July, in order to prevent the excessive discharge of CO2 into
the atmosphere on that day?......Pumps

Guantanamo

My olde American history book told me that there were three
branches of government - Executive, Congressional and
Judicial.....Since the establishment of Guantanamo and it's
housing of 'suspected' terrorists there have been certain
members of the Congressional branch which did not like the
actions of the Executive......

This Congressional group claimed that they did not
have a 'say' in 'the matter' and were left out of the 'loop'.....
So Guantanamo and its 'problems' wound up at the doorstep
of the third branch of government - the Judicial......

The Judicial said that, #1 the Congressional is correct in their
being left out of the 'loop'.....Then, #2 the Congressional should
now 'fix' the situation......In one decision the Judicial has taken
the problem away from the Executive.....And something tells
me that the Congressional, did not and, does not want this
problem.....Especially in this election year of 2006......

Guantanamo like immigration has become another political

Miss Utility And The Three Wise Men

Once again my back yard is full of little 'red flags' and 'red spray
paint' lines.....Miss Utility has send by the 'three wise men' from
the cable company, telephone company and electric company to
mark their territory like a dog on a fire hydrant.......

A recent telephone outage, on my land line, due to damage caused
during the installation of another fiber optic cable, resulted in the
arrival of Miss Utility again......My 'land line' will be replaced......

Each of these 'wise men' has come with his little electrical measuring
device, a can of spray paint on a stick and a back pocket full of little
red flags.....They drive a little small pickup truck and they do their
assigned task in minutes......No hard labor......Read your meter, spray
their paint and plant the flags......

All for $15.00 an hour......Sure beats working at McDonalds.......
I suspect that there may be some pressure with this job due to the
assignments of the day in the allotted time, but when it comes
down to it, it's really an easy gig......

Believe it on not, these wages do save money.....The law suits

Music and Cookies

Every music player on the internet has some kind of 'cookie'
attached to it.....While some of these 'cookies' are 'negligent',
some are 'tracking'.......In one other simple word, 'spyware'....
Trying to find 'clean' music, to play in the background, while
you are on the computer is tough, to say the least......

Any music 'service' out there wants to make money, usually
from the teenagers and '20 somethings.......Let's face it, they
have a right to do business......On the other hand to try to
find the 'spyware free' services is a little like playing Sherlock
Holmes with your computer mouse......

Following the logic of the famous Holmes, you have to find the
music on sites which have no desire to make any money....A
site that is just providing a service......I hate to say it, but some
government site in the world......

I have listened to Australian 'country music' for the past few
years without any 'cookies'......(They play a lot of American
artists).....Now, I am giving the BBC a 'shot'......
