The Waiting Room
Did you ever notice that there is not a "waiting room" in a
sales office of a car dealer?.....There may be a few chairs
over in a corner in order to see if your deposit check
"clears the bank"......
If a company really wants to make money, for any
transaction with you, there is no "waiting room" or if
there is one it is small or even minute......
If you go to a "professional" (ie: doctor, dentist, lawyer)
there is a "waiting room" and a large one at that......
Service performed is on their time schedule, not yours......
Of all the "waiting rooms" I believe an Personal Injury
Attorney may be slightly smaller because your injury
law suit may provide a sizeable financial gain.....Oh well,
here I am back in the car dealership......Pumps

More LEAD Stuff
Continuing my searches into the effect of the chemical lead,
(Pb), on the population, see past posts Public Nuisance
numbers 1 and 2, I found one more interesting fact suitable
for pub talk......
The Romans were one of the first to use lead....Guess
where they found it?....In Romania...Guess how
many Romanians died in mining it?......A lot.......
I wonder if there was a "published paper" back in the
year 100AD denoting the harmful effect of lead?.....
The interesting fact that I ran across was that Rome
used the lead for piping in the city's water system......
Thus Rome fell due to an over population of sick people....
If this is true, I wonder how many older cities in the
world have lead pipes under their streets......
I for one remember repairing one in New York City
back in 1985.......Pumps

Connecting The Dots
Since I, in one form or another, was connected with the paint
industry for some 25 years, resulting in blog "Public
Nuisance, some days ago, I had to try to put the pieces of
this lead paint legation together, in my own mind.....
Sherwin Williams, NL Industries and Millennium Holdings
were all held legally accountable in the recent jury verdict....
Everyone knows SW, but who are NL and Millennium?.....
It seems the latter two companies make Titanium Dioxide,
the stuff that makes white paint -WHITE......Since it also
makes toothpaste WHITE, it can not be a substance with a
problem......Where does the lead (Pb) come in?......
Before TiO2 (titanium dioxide) was used to make paint
WHITE, PbCO3 (lead carbonate) was used.....Both NL and
Millennium manufactured lead carbonate before switching
over to titanium dioxide......While the US Government said
the use of lead was to be discontinued in the manufacture
of paint in 1978 reports have some companies in the
industry discontinuing lead as far back as 1938, 1947 and
1955.....Good information for you next "pub" discussion.....

The Bears
Here in Richmond the big story is "The Bears"....Two bears were
"put down" because one bear bit a child.....It seems that you
have to analyze the brain tissue of a bear to see if it has rabies...
Test are conducted post-mortem.....
The town is upset because the parents may have lifted the
child over a "human" fence in order to go to the "animal"
fence.....Once the child put his/her hand through the second
fence it was bit by one of the two bears.....
Everyone is very upset over the "putting down" of the two
bears, which have been in Maymount Park for a number of
years.....They are also complaining about the quick decision
to do so.....
No one has yet to mention that there is some lawyer who
said, "Check the bears for rabies, the city does not need
a multi-million dollar law suit."......
As of this "post" neither the lawyer nor the parents have
been identified......It's a legal world these days....Pumps

Hot Dogging #2
For all practical purposes the Olympics are over.....The
last "crowning glory" to my Hot Dogging theory came with
the women's figure skating finals.....
The winner was a young lady who was ready to give up
the sport because she thought she was not good enough.....
But she was......
She was good enough to be "conservative" in her skating
routine and just perform to HER own abilities......She knew
her limits and stayed within them....The other medal
winners did not win gold because they attempted "to
go where no one has gone before".....
Captain Kirk is only on a TV show.....Pumps

Public Nuisance #2
No this is not a continuation of yesterday's paint opinion......
This is about TELEMARKETERS.....Another favorite
subject of mine......
If you want to stop the calls, you have to add your name,
address, telephone number and jock strap size to a
newly formed "data bank".....Or else you have to spend
money each month with the telephone company for
a call screening devise, known as Caller ID......
Not wishing to do either, I just give the "nice" people
on the other end of the telemarketing call a really
hard time and try to ruin their entire day......
Oh! There is such satisfaction in little things....Pumps

A Public Nuisance
Well today a jury in the State of Rhode Island has decided
that lead paint, applied prior to 1978, in a dwelling is
considered a public nuisance......I wonder what the lawyers
for the plaintiff consider dog poop, on the sidewalk, to
be?.....
But, I guess, if you slipped on it that would be Personal
Injury law and not Corporate legation.....The case was
State of Rhode Island vs. Sherwin Williams and a few other
paint related companies......Another fancy "ambulance
chaser" law suit.....
Beware! Once the anti-corporate lawyer types find a way to
make money on "public nuisance" cases they will be bringing
suit against drug stores with perfume aisles or chewing
gum manufacturers that make gum that sticks to the
bottom of tables or the pavement.....Pumps

Bitch, Bitch, Bitch
As mentioned previously, I check in with the NOLA newspaper
each day.....If you remember a few weeks ago many of the
New Orleans flood victims were asked to leave their hotel
rooms, which they were using as "temporary housing".....
There was a big "hue and cry" about people being kicked out
onto the streets......
Now on March first the police and firemen, which were living
on the cruise ships in the NO harbor, have to vacate their
staterooms......Guess what, there is another "hue and cry"
from this sector of the population......
Question!.....What did all these people think?......I guess the
answer was that they would live out the remainder of their
lives and raise their grandchildren while living in a small
hotel room or POSH stateroom, on an anchored ship......
People, get a life......Pumps

"No Cook" Egg Roll
The following applies to Chinese "take out" (or "take away")....
If you eat Chinese food in a restaurant or if you have it
delivered to your door, for instant consumption, this "hint"
is of no use.....
An egg roll, whether it is made on the premises or factory
made, is assembled and deep fired....When it is ordered, from
the menu, it is heated and deep fried again.....Since the filling
of an egg roll is mostly vegetable it now has twice as much
fat content due to the second deep frying.....
So if you order Chinese "take out" containing an egg roll for
consumption at home, even with the possibility of reheating,
do not have the egg roll deep fried for the second time....
Have the restaurant give it to you "as it is".....When you
want to eat it....Microwave it on "high" for 45sec to 1min.....
You will never notice the difference.....The Chinese people
will think you are an idiot.....You will reduce your intake
of cholesterol.....Have been doing it for years.....Pumps

ski slopes of Vermont, the current Olympic USA athletics
are showing signs of bad qualities I noticed those many
years ago......
"HOT DOG".....Classic words for SHOW OFF,
EXHIBITIONIST, BRAZEN.....
It worked well at the local ski resort.....It got you attention,
a few free drinks and all the companionship you wanted....
You did something no one else "dared" to do....EGO good.....
In the Olympics a "good show" does not seem to work.....It
is the years of trial and effort, training and perfection of the
"craft" what wins the GOLD.......HOT DOGS just win BEERS....

It's Mardi Gras Time
Here it is almost six months after Katrina hit poor New
Orleans and, in reality, nothing has changed regarding
the politics of that city.......
While everyone focuses on Congressional Hearings and
the placement of blame, no where do you hear or read
about the current internal political problems in its
city and state governments.....
If you read their local paper, you will still see the same
political problems and money "grabs" that effected
the city both prior and post the hurricane......Everyone
wants a piece of the action and "money pie".....The
racial factor is still a problem and it's all NO and LA.....
DC is just the "whipping boy".....Pumps

Hamburgers
What in God's name has happened to hamburger meat?....
Years ago you went into your local butcher and asked for
a pound or two of hamburger meat......If it was not
pre-ground, in the showcase, he would go into the cooler
and get some beef scraps and grind it in front of you......
Gone are those olde days.....Now you go to the supermarket
and buy it packaged in a plastic tray or if you desire
it in a "tube" (packaged by an unknown food processor and
subject to "recall" at a moments notice.).....
No matter which way you buy it, these days, it seems when
you go to cook it there is this unknown fluid which it
produces.....Is it fat or is it water?.....The grand question!......
In any case a 1/2 pound patty becomes a 1/4 pound patty
when it is cooked.....And let us not get into the "prepackaged
burger" meat which contains fillers and other ground up
steer body parts......Pumps

The Next Poor Bastard
This thought has just occurred to me....And, I have not heard it
mentioned elsewhere.....What will happen to the next
President of the United States if he or she is a Republican?.....
In light of the current political division between Republicans
and Democrats and the non-existence of any bi-partianship,
a 2008 winner, which is a "R", should be "doomed".....
With all the present attacks on the Bush-Cheney team can
you imagine what the next "crew" would be subjected
to in the political arena and press.....
If it is said that you CAN win by terror, is the current
political mode of the "Ds" just a prelude and a training ground
for the next "R"?........Pumps

The Truth
The only real way to stop a rumor or additional speculation on
a given subject is by telling the truth.......The truth seems to
stop rumors dead in their tracts......And I must add in this
political world, if it is not the truth, it should be damn good
and sound like the truth......
A few decades ago a boss of mine wound up with a case of the
"crabs"......Yes those little bugs......The rumors were rampant
in the business office and this poor man became the "talk of
the water cooler"......In order to stop all the rumor and fuss
concerning his "condition" he proceeded to write a large
sign and affix it to his office door.......He closed the door....The
sign was read and the rumors came to an quick end.......
The source of the "little devils" was the men's wash room,
third stall, sixth floor......This notification worked......I hope
the same "truth" works for Mr. Cheney......By the way
a few "insiders" really knew the true source of the "little
devils"........Like I said, above, it should sound damn good....

White House Press Corp
I guess the older that you get, the more you begin to notice
things and the more you get annoyed.....
For years I have been watching a group of intelligent adults
sit in a room and ask questions of a man standing at a
podium.....For years I considered this to be a process of
government and its dissemination of information.....But as of
late I guess I am getting annoyed.....It just may be that I am
listening to what is going on......
It appears that this room full of people are all asking the
"same" question in a different verbal form.....And if they
do not get the answer, to this "same" question, that they
want to hear, they get mad and upset......
We all know the the government "spins" things.....We all
know the the press "spins" things.....So what has happened
to the "little game" that was played out each day at a
White House press briefing....Will violence erupt, someday,
and will we have a fist fight between the corp and the
podium people?......Seems like it is coming to that....Pumps
things and the more you get annoyed.....

Hydrogen Cars
It is being said that the hydrogen car is the car of the future.....
Clean, safe and reliable.....For some reason I doubt this....
For years, the technology has existed to convert any standard
gasoline engine to use with propane.....It is a simple
carburetor conversion kit designed in the mid-70s......
While some "on the road" vehicles do use propane, most
propane is used in fork lift trucks operated in a large
indoor warehouses......Propane does not pollute if it burns
cleanly.....
To use propane in an "on the road" vehicle you must properly
protect the "propane tank" which is in the rear of the
vehicle......A rear end collision involving a propane powered
vehicle can cause a problem if the "tank" or its fuel line is
ruptured.....One unnecessary spark and --........

to design the vehicle with a "tank" to carry it as a the fuel
source.....Perhaps the model name of this vehicle should be

Nor'easter #2
Well the big storm has come and gone......Virginia's capitol
city saw its share of vehicle accidents last night and early
this morning.....The sun came out in the afternoon and
melted the 1/4" of snow that had fallen.....
The central part of Virginia is a meteorologist's nightmare.....
With the Shenandoah and its mountains to the west and
the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean to the east, no one
can accurately predict which weather pattern will win over
the other.....Snow in the western mountains and rain over
the bodies of water.....I guess central Virginia is the "home of
the wintry mix"......
This "neck of the woods" has had its BIG snow storms and
its BAD ice storms, but as a rule if you want just a little snow
in your life then I guess central Virginia is the place to be.....

Nor'easter
A word that has been used in novels for years to depict a
violent storm...."Batten down the hatches" or "Shutter
the house" etc......The wrath of God has descended upon
the wicked......
Well since it is the winter this nor'easter will bring snow....
A summer one would bring rain.....The Northeast portion
of the United States is preparing.....Snow plows "at the
ready".....Supermarkets void of beer, soda, potato chips
and frozen pizza......All await the destruction......
The "youngin's" never remember the BIG storms.....They
just have not lived long enough....Us "olde farts" do
remember.....We remember when 12" or 18" of snow was
"fun and frolic" time.....You just stayed at home and waited
for the snow to melt.....
Today the "youngin's" can not wait....They have things to
do and places to see.....But for some reason it only takes
3"-5" for them to stay home.....And complain.....
God's wrath is now 5" of snow.....Boy have times changed....

In The Loop
No matter what you do in politics, no matter which political
party you belong to, someone or some faction will say you
are wrong and made an incorrect decision.......If you say it
is "white", it has to be "black"......
The next thing you hear is that, "You left me/us out of the
loop".....You did not trust us.....You did not keep us informed.....
You had no right to make a unilateral decision......
Why is no decision ever right?.......Outside of using a piece
of "political knowledge" for political gain, I believe the

Law Suits
Personal injury lawyers, or as they were known in my
earlier days as "ambulance chasers", are all over the
place and ready to take their share of a client's
settlement, if they win, at the drop of a hat......I hate to
say it, I like the French System......Bring the suit and if
you lose, you pay all court costs.....The possibility of
"losing" money does decrease frivolous law suits.....
In Australia a woman sued for the wrongful death of
her husband......#1 At a dinner party a Benihana chef
tossed shrimp at him and refused to stop when asked....
#2 During the next six months the husband went to
doctors "for various ailments" and then underwent
surgery to relieve numbness in an arm.......#3 Five
months later he had a high fever and died......
The wife sued Benihana for his death because the
shrimp throwing chef "set in motion the forces that lead
to his death".....
It took two hours for the jury to return a verdict.....
Do you think she won or lost her 13 million dollar

High Gas Prices
The major panic seems to be over.....Gasoline prices, which
may still seem high to some, have dropped from their
highest levels of last Fall and early Winter.....
Recently there has been a lot of media coverage of the
high yearly and last quarter profits of the Exxon/Mobil
Oil Company.....This in turn lead to a very vocal
outburst of consumer complaints regarding the "gouging"
of the public, even my many news talk show hosts.....
Something you may not hear about.....FACT: British
Petroleum (BP/Amoco to some) just reported a 31%
rise in its annual net profit......Some 18.64 million uros.......
If I remember correctly Dutch Shell did not to too bad
either.......
It appears that if someone wants to blame Washington,
they better start blaming London and The Hague in
the same breath.....Pumps

Fix Or Repair Daily = FORD
These new fangled cars can drive an olde man crazy.....
Years ago you could fix almost everything that went wrong
on a vehicle by yourself, if you were so talented....Not
today.....
Outside of the electronic control fuel mechanism, you
also have a large interlocking electrical circuit which
could also be used to launch a space ship to the moon.....
Today's problem was a dome light which would not go
out, which resulted in three calls to my mechanic......
I have come to the conclusion that the entire interior
lighting system, dome, foot and even glove box, are
connected to the electric automatic door locking system....
In changing the position on a rear door lock, child safety
switch, I suspect the Taurus finally concluded that the
car doors were locked to "its" satisfaction and then
shut the dome light out......Wonders will never cease.....

Next The Chariots
Well the gladiators had their day.....The local scribes have
let their opinions be known on the day's combat, the
presentation of the collection of ancient stones and the
attempted sale of a fungal wheat/hops beverage.......
The coliseum will now be closed for a few weeks in order
to prepare for the chariot races.....
Soon the gallant charioteers will be racing around in a
counter-clockwise circle.....There will be a high volume
of noise.....There will be collisions amongst competitors.....
And the crowd will love every time a chariot passes
by advertising Marcus' Herculaneum Herring or
Vesuvian Ash Washing Detergent.....What a sport.....

Gladiators & Chicken Wings
Things have not changed much since the Greek wrestling
matches or the Roman gladiatorial games, except the food....
It seems the populace still likes to sit in stadiums and
watch people beat the living crap out of other people......
I wonder if it relieves some inner tensions or maybe
it provides some deep pleasure.......
In an case today is the grand day in America....The Super
Bowl......Twenty two men will try to beat the living crap
out of each other.....Everyone will watch while they eat
and drink themselves into a frenzy......Money will be lost
and won, as is another custom......
Buffalo chicken wings, chili, chips, dips, cocktail sausage,
beer, soda will be consumed in vast quanties.....How come
the History Channel never tells you what the Greeks and
Romans ate?.....Did anyone see any vendors walking up
and down the steps of the coliseum in Russell Crowe's
galadiator movie?......Of course the emperor, in his
Sky Box, had his grapes and wine.....Pumps

At times you look back and realize that people and nations
do not grow up....The words change but the attitudes do
not.....
In a school yard you threw a rock at someone that you
did not like.....You got your feelings out and you felt in
the "right" for doing so......"So there", you said to
yourself.....But
When he threw the rock back, you considered it to be
"unfair".....He had no "right"......So you ran home and
told your parents it the hopes that THEY would help you
"in winning the day" by telling HIS parents.....
Today nations are doing the same....."I can hurt you, but
do not hurt me back, or else".......Does "man" really
develop?......Sometimes I wonder......Pumps

A Cartoon
I suspect that the war in Iraq will become some what of a
side issue pretty soon.....The next fire storm in the Middle
East will be the result of some newspaper cartoons.....
Little has been said in the United States media about the
"happenings" in Europe and other parts of the world due
to the publication of cartoons last September in Denmark....
Just think the countries of the Middle East may just
become so "ticked off" that their financial base which is
supported by Europe will suffer a major crisis......A boycott
of Danish dairy products could lead to other boycotted
foods.....The return to a 7th century diet of beans and
goats meat may effect the political stability, between the
various factors, in the area......
It is quite possible that a cartoon will have a much greater
effect on the coalition of tribal groups than the use of
10 armored military divisions.....History will only
tell.....Pumps

Where's Winter?
Here in the Eastern United States it seems that winter
has yet to come.......Warm temperatures are preventing
the accumulation of snow and reducing heating bills.....
What everybody forecasted has yet to occur.....
There are those who will bring up the "global warming"
gambit but that does not even hold true this year.....
For some reason it seems that the Winter has gone to
Europe.....Excessive cold and snowfall has taken its
toll on the poor continent.....Next we will hear about
a bad avalanche season in the Alps......
Also, it seems there will be plenty of snow in Italy for
this year's 2006 Winter Olympics.....It there some grand
plan to put the snow where it is needed?....Pumps

Tim Kaine #2
It will be a bumpy ride.....Mr. Kaine has made his move into
politics and depending on who you want to talk to, he is
either the greatest new face in the arena or he is a fool
and idiot......Since he is married to the daughter of a past
Virginia Governor, I suspect he will be considered the former....
From what I am to understand, he wrote his own speech.....
As things go, he will have to live his future political career by
this "foundation" document/speech.....
"There is a better way" will go down in history just as the
words "Read my lips, no new taxes".......
Remember, Mr. Governor, "There is a better way" to improve
the infrastructure of the State of Virginia, without raising
taxes.....Now live by your own words and FIND IT.....Pumps
