Tar Beach

You have to have lived in New York City without a dime in your
pocket to appreciate Tar Beach......Without the money to get on
a subway train or a bus, you were destined to cool off on a hot
summer day by going up to the roof of your apartment building....

There you spread a blanket (insulation) on the hot tar rolled
roofing of the building......Now it was time to enjoy a bottle of
Coke and hope that there was a breeze coming.....Prior to the
days of air conditioning, if you sat in your apartment you would
'cook'......Good olde Tar Beach, while hot, had air and air meant a
possible breeze.....Possible breeze meant 'cool'.......

On those olde hot days, if you could not make it to Coney Island
or Orchard Beach, there was Tar Beach.......It may not have
been great fun but at least no one could kick sand in your
face.......You can not kick tar......Pumps
