Today in 1678

On this date in 1678 Jonas Bronck bought from the local
Indians, for 400 beads, what the New Yorkers call
"The Bronx"....One of its five boroughs.....

In the past 300 years, or so, this large wooded area has
seen its share of farms, an American Revolutionary skirmish,
and a multitude of apartment houses.....While the Bronx
Zoo and Botanical Gardens have survived, Freedom Land
was replaced by more apartment buildings....

History has recorded all there is to know about The Bronx,
except the quality of the 400 beads....For one day Mr. Bronck
went hunting up along the East River and was killed by the
local Indians.....Poor Jonas......Pumps
